About HMAK
Kappa League

In years past, our Kappa League program was only offered to four high-schools and two grammar schools. Now, the Harvey-Markham Alumni Chapter has recently expanded our Kappa League program to 10 high schools (Eisenhower H.S., Bloom Trail, Bloom, Mari- an Catholic, Richards, Rich East, Rich South, Rich Central, Southland College Prep, Sheppard H.S.) and one middle school (Huth Middle School) throughout the Chicagoland area. In 2015, we ended with 25 Kappa Leaguers. We currently have 40 young men who are actively involved in our program, with additional 40 young men looking to join for 2016-17. Our Kappa League parents are seeing the growth in our program, and are volunteering more with fundraising, and wherever else they may lend a hand, to support our young men.

The program consists of four mandatory growth experiences which include: education, community service, workshops, and ‘Stepping.’ The educational facet requires the Kappa Leaguers to attend study tables Monday through Thursday after school and provide correspondence regarding their academic achievement, attendance, and any disciplinary issues from teachers twice per month. These gentlemen must maintain strong character when representing both their educational institution and themselves at all times, as there is not a grade point average requirement. However, our Kappa League committee monitor grades by checking report cards to ensure they are on the right path of being eligible to graduate on time, be in a position to apply and get accepted to college, and exceed their own expectations. It is in extending our experience to reach any student who wants to be part of our program that makes this opportunity a valuable experience for everyone involved.
The community service facet requires the students to participate in a scheduled community service project twice a month. The service project can range anywhere from providing food to the homeless or simply giving up a Saturday to work with younger individuals. There are times that some of our Kappa Leaguers will assist the brothers of our chapter with the community service projects we host.

The workshops are developed for character building. The gentlemen are given classes in awareness that take place once per month. These workshops give the students the opportunity to explore and discuss different life or school related issues. The men of Omicron Mu Mu chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., hosts an Anger Management workshop, in which our Leaguers participate in. This is in effort to become one body in the community to raise our young men in the better citizens and leaders.

Lastly, is the stepping facet which requires the participants to perform in an average of five to seven events annually. This component not only teaches the students how to step, but it also provides them with discipline, dedication, commitment, coordination, and team building. Our annual middle/high- school step show, hosted by our Kappa League, averages about $7,000 in revenue. This is due an increase in popularity that the young men has gain throughout the state. So much so, that they accepted an invitation to perform as the opening act for The Windy City Takeover step show for our fraternity’s 93rd North Central Province back in 2014. Our mission for 2017-18 is to have them compete in Stomp Wars hosted by Rickey Smiley in Houston, Texas in 2018. Achievement!
